What Kilimani Is Like
Kilimani sits south of the CBD, bounded by Ngong Road to the south and Argwings Kodhek Road to the east. It runs on its own rhythm. Mornings belong to the coffee shop crowd at Artcaffé and Cultiva. Afternoons are for the terrace restaurants along Denis Pritt Road and Kindaruma Road. Evenings bring out a dining scene that rivals anything in the city.
It is not a party neighbourhood — Westlands handles that. Kilimani is for people who want quality without effort: good food within walking distance, reliable transport, and enough green space to actually feel settled rather than squeezed.
The neighbourhood attracts professionals, NGO staff, expats on long contracts, and international guests who have learned that Kilimani gives you more for your money than a hotel in the CBD ever will.
Getting Around
Most of Kilimani is walkable within the neighbourhood. Yaya Centre, Prestige Plaza, and the main restaurant strips are within a 10–15 minute walk from anywhere along Ole Odume Road or Kindaruma Road.
- Matatus: Routes 23 and 24 connect Kilimani to the CBD. Journey time: 15–25 minutes in normal traffic, longer during morning and evening peak hours (7–9am, 5–7pm).
- Bolt / Uber: Consistently available throughout the neighbourhood. CBD to Kilimani: KES 300–600. JKIA to Kilimani: 30–40 minutes via the Nairobi Expressway, KES 1,500–2,500 depending on time of day.
- Nairobi Expressway: The Ngong Road interchange gives direct access to the expressway, connecting to JKIA in approximately 30 minutes and Westlands in 10.
Where to Eat and Drink
Kilimani has the most concentrated restaurant scene in Nairobi outside of Westlands. The stretch along Denis Pritt Road and around Prestige Plaza alone has enough variety to cover an entire stay.
Coffee and Breakfast
- Artcaffé (Yaya Centre) — the anchor of Kilimani mornings. Reliable espresso, good avocado toast, fast Wi-Fi. Expect a queue on weekend mornings.
- Cultiva (Denis Pritt Road) — smaller, quieter, better beans. One of the best specialty coffee shops in Nairobi.
- Java House (Prestige Plaza) — dependable all-day menu, good for working lunches. Multiple outlets across Kilimani.
Lunch and Casual Dining
- Mama Oliech's (off Argwings Kodhek Road) — the most famous nyama choma and tilapia spot in Nairobi. Cash only, often a wait, always worth it. A Nairobi institution.
- Brew Bistro (Yaya Centre) — good burgers, wide craft beer selection, lively atmosphere on weekend afternoons.
Dinner
- Cedars Restaurant (Lenana Road) — Lebanese food, one of the best in Nairobi. Excellent mezze and grills. Book ahead on weekends.
- The Talisman (nearby Karen) — if you're willing to travel 20 minutes south, one of the best dining experiences in East Africa.
Shopping
- Yaya Centre — the neighbourhood anchor. Artcaffé, Chandarana Foodplus, pharmacy, banking, clothing boutiques. More upmarket than it looks from outside.
- Prestige Plaza — Carrefour supermarket, Java House, casual dining, electronics. Larger and more spread out than Yaya.
- Junction Mall (Ngong Road) — 15 minutes south. Naivas supermarket, Zara, cinema (one of the best screens in Nairobi), food court.
- Adams Arcade (Ngong Road) — more local, less polished, cheaper prices on everyday goods. Good for produce and hardware.
Medical and Essentials
- Nairobi Hospital — 10 minutes from most of Kilimani. One of Nairobi's leading private hospitals for emergencies and specialist care.
- Aga Khan University Hospital (Parklands) — 15 minutes north. Also excellent, particularly for maternity and specialist services.
- Oasis Medical Centre (Ole Odume Road) — walk-in clinic, good for minor issues and prescriptions without a long wait.
- Pharmacies: Goodlife Pharmacy at Yaya Centre stocks common medications and operates extended hours (8am–10pm most days).
